Le Meridien Nirwana - Tanah Lot's Shame
Le Meridien Nirwana was built using an illegally obtained building permit under the Suharto Government (read our page on the Suharto Government - it tells you how they killed 100,000 Balinese in one year alone).

The Nirwana has angered the Balinese and broken laws protecting their heritage by being built directly above their sacred sea temple.

Le Meridien, the hotel group that own the Le Meridien Nirwana Golf and Spa Resort overlooking Tanah Lot in Bali are owned, not surprisingly, by the Nikko hotel group. The very same group that own the Nikko Bali Nusa Dua jointly with Siti Hediati Hariyadi "Titiek" (Suharto's cousin) and Sigit Harjoyudanto (Suharto's daughter). So it is perhaps not surprising or dificult to work out how they obtained their permit to build overlooking the sacred temple of Tanah Lot. After all, Suharto did not care about the heritage or laws of Bali, his government killed over 100,000 Balinese during the course of one year alone and stole land from them by way of compulsory purchase programs.
