Waka Shorea is operated by Waka Holdings of Bali, AKA Waka Experience. They present themselves as an eco-friendly, responsible tourism hotel / company, but they are far from that. They obtained a building permit for Waka Shorea during Suharto's Government (say no more) on Menjangan Island (Bali Barat). This came after the National Park decided it was illegal to build hotels on park land, but Waka got their permit anyway.

One of the reasons the National Park themselves ruled that hotels were not to be built on Bali Barat / Menjangan Island was due to the near extinct Bali Starling and Mouse Deer. Previously, no-one had even been allowed to walk / venture there, let alone build a hotel there. The National Park Authority even closed their own homestay (not that it was on ground as sensitive as Menjangan Island) because they deemed it's presence was illegal. But Waka Holdings then, shortly after, got a building permit to build Waka Shorea! Go figure.

The Balinese despise Waka
Go to the nearby Hindu / original Balinese villages (e.g. Pemuteran) and ask them what they think about Waka Shorea!

Then Waka Shorea get really nasty
After being caught Spamming a travel forum for business, one of their management made a death threat ("BTW, the way I want to sue you is not by any law, but mine. I believe you have seen how Indonesian sue each other? They slash about 1cm below your neck" - charming) against the owner of that forum for asking if they were the hotel that had built on stolen land. You can read about this in detail here: WakaShorea. What is all telling is that Waka Holdings have not to this day apologized, retracted the threat or disciplined / fired their manager.

Waka Hotels are not comfortable / safe
Apart from their ethics, Waka Shorea is also, reportedly, a very uncomfortable and unsafe hotel. There is no air conditioning (it gets very, very hot in this area of Bali) and the boats used to transfer guests to their hotel on Menjangan Island have frequently capsized.
